COURSE OVERVIEW: COMPUTER OPERATOR INTRODUCTION

 

Computer Operator Introduction is a course designed to familiarize students with basic operations of computers.  The course introduces the history and development of modern microcomputers, hardware and software components, development and use of the Internet and operating systems using Microsoft Windows 98.  This is a 40-hour course that covers 4 units of study and meets for 4 hours daily, for 2 weeks.  The daily class is structured with 2 hours of instruction that is lecture and hands-on activity-based instruction followed by 2 hours of project completion and typing practice.  The following units are typical of the units in this course.

 

STUDY UNIT 1 – INTRODUCTION AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS

 

This 2-hour unit of study is covered during the first 2-hour day of class instruction.  Students will complete registration materials and interest/needs questionnaires.  The instructor will review the course outline and explain course requirements. The instructor will show a Power Point presentation explaining the content of the business program courses.  The instructor will review questionnaires and address the needs of the group in a question and answer period.  This unit includes 5 individual lesson plans.  At the conclusion of this unit all students should be able to identify all materials they need for the course and what is required for a passing grade. 

 

STUDY UNIT 2 – COMPUTER BASICS

 

This 4-hour unit of study is covered during the third and fourth days of 2-hour class instruction.  The instructor will provide specific information on the history and development of computers and people who have made significant impacts on the world of computers.  The instructor will provide specific information on the components of a computer including hardware and software.  This unit includes 8 individual lesson plans.  At the conclusion of this unit students should be able to identify people who have significantly impacted the world of computers and identify the major components of computers evidenced by completing a multiple choice test. 

 

STUDY UNIT 3 – DOCUMENT BASICS

 

This 4-hour unit of study is covered during the fifth and sixth days of 2-hour class instruction.  The instructor will provide specific instruction on the creation, changing, saving and printing of word processing documents.  This unit includes 8 individual lesson plans.  At the conclusion of this unit students should be able to open a program, create a word processing document, save the document to a floppy disk and print the document as evidenced by demonstration.
